ABOUT LAINGSBURG

Welcome to the historical home of Stephanus Greeff, the father of Laingsburg. Experience the warmth and hospitality that early travelers enjoyed when they stayed at his farm, Fischkuil. Immerse yourself in the rich history of the area while enjoying modern comforts. Explore the charming village that Greeff helped establish, and discover the beauty of Laingsburg.

In 1862, Stephanus Greeff obtained ownership of the property known as "Zoute Vlakte" or Salty Flats. Presently, the town relies on this farm as a water source. The area contains isolated graves near the original homestead, serving as a reminder of those who were unable to continue their journey. One such grave is that of Margaret, the first wife of Henry Greene, who later became the civil commissioner in Colesberg. Margaret, a deeply religious woman, fell ill during a trip on one of the post coaches and had to seek medical attention at Zoute Vlakte. Unfortunately, she passed away.

Her grave is marked by a black granite tombstone inscribed with the words "secure in her faith in The Lord." The farm provided shade and access to fresh drinking water, quickly becoming a popular rest stop. In 1879, Greeff acquired "Vischuil aan de Buffelsrivier" with the intention of establishing a settlement. He requested that a portion of this farm be surveyed for this purpose. However, before his dream could be realized, a servitude needed to be rerouted. Greeff turned to John Laing, the commissioner for crown land and public works, who agreed to the rerouting.

The farm and the fledgeling village initially shared the same name, but later the settlement became known as Buffels River. When the railway arrived, the name was changed to Nassau to avoid confusion with Buffalo River in East London. Subsequently, the village was renamed in honor of John Laing, whose decision to relocate a servitude paved the way for the creation of a town. At first, the town was called Laings Town, but due to the Afrikaans pronunciation of "town" as "toon", jokes started circulating. To prevent this, a swift change was made, resulting in the village being named Laingsburg before any jokes could take hold.
